Mark De Backer

Who is Mark De Backer?

Mark De Backer is a Sommelier-Conseil; he lectures and writes about grapes and wine. With more than 20 years of experience, today he willingly shares his expertise and passion via AmpeloPlus. Ampelo is the Greek word for grape, and Plus stands for everything that has to do grapes; ampelography, geology, wine making and, of course, wine tasting.

He had previously established a very diverse career in the ICT sector: manager at a distribution company, marketing and sales manager in Belgium and international business development manager at one of the largest ICT companies in the world. Today, he is an independent consultant and is active as crowd-funding angel, mentor and director. This core activities include performing market analyses, segmenting customers or developing business plans.

He completed his studies as Sommelier Conseil at the Université du Vin in Suze la Rousse. He was a lecturer at the Vlaamse Wijnacademie and, as IBWE International Wine Educator, helped to set up the Bordeaux training courses at Syntra.

He writes as wine journalist for i.e. Ken Wijn and is a wine blogger. Besides being a wine master in a commandery of the Flemish Wine Guild, he is also a jury member of the renowned Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.

In addition to a strong interest in the lesser-known grape varieties, he is also passionate about mineral terroirs. Or how the geology and location of the vineyard influence the winemaker and ultimately the wine.  As a true citizen of the world, he has criss-crossed and visited numerous wine regions and countries.

  • Teambuilding workshop: wine-assemblage and wine-making

    Entertainment
    Management
    HR & Wellbeing

Behind every great wine, there is an entire team. The winemaker works closely with the oenologist. The marketing team is responsible for a strong brand and the necessary advertising. The sales agent and local wine merchant take care of the distribution and sales.

Wine-making is therefore the ideal subject for a team-building activity. Who doesn't want to make their own wine and claim the coveted medal? After a short introduction to vinification, we will discover the differences between how red and white wines are made. We will also gain insight into the main grapes used in the production of mono varieties and blended wines.

After that, we will all try our hand at assemblage. Each team starts assembling its own wine after a short brainstorming session. Experimentation and blending will determine the final style and individual taste. After bottling, it will be time for the creative minds. Design a stylish label and also set the price. The final product will be presented to a jury and, who knows, may be awarded a medal.

Going to a restaurant with a client and then having to choose the right wine from the wine list. After a busy working day, going to a bar with colleagues and then having to select a suitable glass of wine. You have a special old bottle in the cellar at home.

Do you uncork it now or perhaps wait another year? Most people have already found themselves in one of these situations and not everyone feels confident about it.

Which wine do you serve with which dish? What are the main grapes and how do you play with these aromas? Do wines really get better as they get older?

Is that wine app really worth it? What do those medals on the bottle actually mean? Can those Parker ratings and the entries in Le Guide d'Achat des Vins really to be trusted?
Not all bottles come with a screw cap these days, so how do you open a bottle of wine correctly? You quickly get the feeling that a lot of things can go wrong.

You will receive a professional answer to such questions during this information session. Together, we will also go through the most important French wine regions so you will better understand wine lists, and we will taste a number of typical grapes.

Objective: to offer sales staff and people involved with customer relations a basic insight into how to read a wine list and pair a suitable wine with their food
Practical: group session for up to 36 persons, graduated prices (1-12) (13-24) (25-36) (>36 upon request)
