Walter Damen studied law at Ufsia and the University of Leuven and obtained additional certificates in forensic medicine, conflict mediation and juvenile law. He started his internship at the Brussels bar in 1996 but returned to his home base of Antwerp after 1 year. The following two years he completed his internship at the law firm Peeters & Partners, where he received a broad education, including in family law, rental law, commercial and economic law and traffic law.
In 1999 he started his own office and increasingly specialized in criminal law. Master Damen is a gifted criminal lawyer with more than 50 assize cases under his belt. In 2017, he was one of the criminal lawyers interviewed by Gilles De Coster for the Canvas documentary series Criminal Lawyers. He has now built a successful office, within which specialization in areas of law other than criminal law could also be achieved.
In addition to his work as a lawyer, Walter Damen has already published several books as co-author. Master Damen is also a much sought after speaker, regularly gives lectures and explanations in the media and he writes a weekly column in Gazet van Antwerpen.
He is currently pursuing a PhD in Criminological Sciences at Ghent University. His PhD deals with the natural law assessment of terrorist legislation.
