Who are 'Heroes of the Resistance'?

'Heroes of the Resistance' was founded by two passionate speakers, Dany Neudt and Tim Van Steendam.
More than fifteen thousand Belgian resistance heroes died during World War II. Fifteen thousand mothers, fathers, sons and daughters who gave their lives for our freedom. They were executed, beheaded, tortured to death, shot in the street ... They were often ordinary citizens who did extraordinary things against the Nazi occupiers. Unfortunately, just about all of them have been forgotten. High time to change that! That is why historian Dany Neudt and writer Tim van Steendam founded the non-profit organization Heroes of the Resistance. With their lectures, they bring to you the blood-curdling stories of the resistance that leave no one untouched.

    Resisting the Nazi occupation

    The resistance consisted of ordinary people who did extraordinary things against the Nazi occupiers. During World War II, 150,000 Belgian compatriots rebelled against the Nazi occupation in the greatest secrecy, and at the greatest risk to their lives. 45,000 of them were arrested; 15,000 lost their lives in the process. Often in gruesome, barbaric ways. Today, these people have disappeared from the collective memory. It is easier to list the name of a collaborator, than the name of a resistance hero. Enough is enough! 80 Years after the fact, the time has come to finally open a closed chapter. Through exciting anecdotes and entertaining stories, we bring this period back to life.

    Youth in resistance to Nazi occupation

    Because of their youthful enthusiasm and fearlessness, teenagers were a grateful asset in the Resistance during World War II. Although our boys and girls were rarely used for armed action, they could serve for recruitment, so-called soft sabotage and smuggling of groceries or weapons. For the Nazi occupiers, age made little impression: whoever fought like an adult was tried like an adult. As a result, hundreds of Belgian minors met their end in the most miserable conditions. The passion with which the youth then stood up against injustice and extremism can be a mirror for all of us today.

    Women in resistance to Nazi occupation

    During World War II, the men were at the front, in the mine or in the fields. But what were the women actually doing? Did they sit listlessly by the fireplace waiting for hubby to come home? Forget it! Remarkably often they were involved in acts of resistance. They smuggled downed British pilots to Spain, sabotaged the German war machine or channelled secret messages to intelligence services. That Belgian women played a crucial role in the victory over the Nazi occupiers is sadly little known. Who were they? What acts of resistance did they commit? And why did they risk their lives? War is often considered a battle of and between men. The role of women in it is historically underexposed. Through some compelling stories, we give these strong figures the attention they deserve.
