Who is Marc Noppen?

Marc Noppen is a lung specialist and Professor at VUB. He graduated in Pharmo-economics (University of Antwerp) and Strategic Management and Governance (INSEAD). Lectures also at the Vlerick Business School. 20 years of clinical-academic experience combined with 15 years as CEO of the large university hospital UZ Brussels.

Special interests in (link between) medicine and (hospital) management and healthcare in general, strategic management, ICT and innovation, and sustainable enterprise. Also concerned with efficient management both during ‘peace time’ and during crises as head of a Flemish medical and university institution in the Brussels-Capital Region, financed by both Federal and Flemish money…. thus becoming a proponent of efficient and effective management. Finally, likes to reflect on medicine and hospitals of the future, art and medicine, and the patient experience.

    Healthcare 2.0: the hospital in the future

    ‘Healthcare’ as we know it today is primarily ‘sickness care’. 
    In order to continue to provide and develop this ‘sickness care’, more resources are needed. These can come from the existing budgets if, at the same time, we also shift the focus towards prevention and health promotion. Only in this way can we continue to guarantee sustainable and high-quality ‘sickness’ care. During this lecture, the following themes will be addressed: digital health, ‘ask the patient’, the future of the pharma model, value-driven care and strategies for healthcare. 

    Covid-19: a lesson in crisis management

    “Never waste a good crisis”: lessons learned (and to be learned) from the Covid-19 crisis. As the CEO of UZ Brussels, Marc Noppen experienced the health crisis very closely and from the inside. During this lecture, he offers an insight into the ABC of crisis management. Not an abstract theory, rather
    lessons that can be applied to the ‘day-to-day’ organisation of healthcare in Belgium.

Marc Noppen showed the bigger picture of the Covid-19 pandemic with concrete examples, related to UZ Brussel, literature, film, philosophy. Very inspiring!
