Who is Lucas De Man?

After studying Germanic Languages at KUL, Lucas De Man (b. 1982 West Flanders) moved to Amsterdam to study directing. He founded his creative project organisation, Company New Heroes, in 2008 and has since continuously created internationally acclaimed performances, documentaries, TV programmes, installations and animations. In 2019, Lucas started a second company, Biobased Creations, which achieved great success immediately with pavilions and installations made from natural building materials. The 2 most famous and award-winning pavilions are The Growing Pavilion (2019) and The Exploded View (2021). The latter is at Camp C in Westerlo in 2023. In addition, Lucas has been a TV presenter of art programmes for Dutch national television for 9 years and is a host and speaker at events all over the world, with the highlights being the Design Indaba Congress in South Africa (2x host and speaker), Ted X Amsterdam (2x host ) YPO Edge (host), Creativity World Forum (speaker), Love Tomorrow (speaker).

    The Times they are a-a changing

    Lucas and his team from Biobased Creations have made several internationally award-winning pavilions from natural building materials. In this wonderfully enthusiastic lecture, Lucas guides you through his projects along the range of possibilities for the future of building, farming, living and landscape. He shows you that we can solve the CO2 and nitrogen problem by building with materials such as hemp, cattail, seaweed, algae and mushrooms. Even the farmers get a viable future perspective as a result. Watch out! After this lecture you will never look at the world the same again.

    I don't know therefore I am

    In this lecture, Lucas shows you how being allowed to search, to doubt and to fail is part of a resilient society in times of uncertainty. This lecture is a wonderful antidote to a time when malleability is king, and failure is seen as your own fault. Lucas pleads for more do-it-together, and more we-don’t-know. Vulnerability as strength. A lecture that touches everyone because it touches the core of all of us.
