When at music academy, Bart Van der Roost's trombone teacher once made a prediction: “Bart, you are going to be a manager one day.” And that's exactly what happened. After completing his music studies, Bart Van der Roost became a manager at Brussels Philharmonic. As musician in an orchestra, he saw how - despite this new digital era - people still had to fiddle around with sheet music. That is why Bart helped to found neoScores and Gustaf; an interactive web platform with digital scores. Bart Van der Roost introduces you to his story about ambitious dreams and hard reality checks; about courage and creativity, at the cutting edge between love for music and creative entrepreneurship, between art and business.

    In reality, successful artists have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Look at painter Peter Paul Rubens, for example: Rubens was a factory, a brand, a CEO and an SME that employed twenty people. He is said to have painted thousands of pictures, but that is physically impossible. Rubens worked with specialised painters who each painted a specific subject matter. His personal contribution may even not have amounted to one percent.

    Artists must (and should) be able to control their own destiny. Artists must become creative entrepreneurs; true craftsmen in a globalised world. Bart Van der Roost passionately defends his vision of artists in the 21st century and looks back at his own past and schooling as a musician, as well as his successful cross-over to entrepreneur. Where does the spirit of the artist end and the drive of the entrepreneur start? How can one inspire the other?
